Career Research Sheet
This is where you research one career at a time. Nothing you type here is graded and nobody else can see it. It saves as you go, so you can leave and come back whenever.
How this works
- Start: type the career, find it on O*NET, slide your gut number, and press Lock. Not sure of a career, or want new ideas? Put your Interest Profiler scores in and O*NET shows careers that fit you.
- Sections 1 to 7: each row has a question, a link that says where to look, and a nurse example if you get stuck. Read, then answer in your own words.
- Build: when all seven sections are done on a career, scroll down and press Build. Then switch tabs and do the other career.
- Turn it in: once both careers are built, press Copy both careers and paste into the box on the Career Research assignment page. One paste, both careers. That's what gets graded.
Do Career 1 first, then click the Career 2 tab and do it again. Each tab keeps its own answers, and both get turned in together.
Name it and give a gut number
Three quick things before any research: name the career, find it on O*NET, and give a gut number.
Do this: get your gut number on record before any research can shape it. Fill in all three parts, then press Lock my first read. Section 1 opens after that.
Find it on O*NET
O*NET is the government's occupation database. Finding your career here doesn't fill anything in for you. It gives every row an exact page to open and shows you what the database says, so you can read it and put it in your own words.
Optional: not sure, or want careers you haven't thought of?
This is what your Interest Profiler was for. Type your six scores from your Interest Profiler results (0 to 40 each) and O*NET shows the careers whose interest profile looks most like yours. Most people find at least one they'd never heard of.
Your gut number, before you research
From 0 to 100, how sure are you right now that this career is a real option for you? Don't overthink it. You'll lock this number, do the research, then rate again at the end. The gap between the two is the interesting part.
Your sheet, ready to paste
Done with all seven sections? Press Build and your answers turn into one block of text, in the order it's graded.
Do this, in order: 1. Press Build this career's sheet and read the first few lines (they show how far your confidence moved). 2. Click the other career's tab at the top and build it too. 3. Scroll down to Both careers, press Copy both careers, paste into the Career Research assignment box in Canvas, and press Submit. You don't need the Copy button in this box unless you want one career by itself.
Before you copy
Need a clean slate? This erases this tool's answers in your account.
Both careers, ready to turn in
This fills in by itself once both careers are built. It's the one paste the Career Research assignment asks for.
Do this: press Copy both careers, then paste into the box on the Career Research assignment page in Canvas.
Side by side, once both careers are built
This fills in by itself once both careers are built. It's the grid the Comparison Summary assignment asks for.
Do this: press Copy the comparison grid, paste it at the top of the Comparison Summary box in Canvas, and write your summary from it.
Moving my work another way (a code instead of a file)
Download progress file is an optional backup. It doesn't turn in your assignment. If a file is awkward on your device, press Export, copy the code, then paste it into this box on the other device and press Restore.
Build your text and copy it out before you close the tab. Don't trust this tool with the only copy.
